Auto technician resume

This page is for general automotive technicians at dealerships and independent shops. (For a broader overview of trades, see our trades and mechanic resume page.)

1. Say your level plainly

Lube tech, general service tech, line tech, master tech, and drivability specialist mean different things to a service manager. Use the title you actually held, and give your current level in the summary.

2. List ASE tests by name and year

Write "ASE A1 Engine Repair, A5 Brakes, A8 Engine Performance (current through 2028)" rather than just "ASE certified". Include the L1 Advanced Engine Performance Specialist if you hold it. Add dealer or factory training by its course or level name.

3. Name the makes and the diagnostic tools

Dealers want brand experience. Independents want breadth. List the makes you've worked on most, and the scan tools and information systems you're fluent in, using their actual names.

4. Use the numbers shops care about

Flat-rate techs can mention average billed hours per week. Others can mention comebacks, efficiency, or a specialty the shop relied on you for. Use only numbers you know, and round honestly.

5. Mention EVs and hybrids only at your real level

If you've done high-voltage safety training or serviced hybrids, say exactly what: "Completed manufacturer high-voltage safety course; replaced hybrid 12V and cooling components." Don't claim battery-pack diagnosis if you haven't done it.

6. One page is usually enough

Name and contact, summary, certifications, technical skills, shops worked at, and training. That covers it.
