Your first resume in 20 years

If your last resume was typed, mailed, or written for a job you got decades ago, a few things have changed. The good news is that modern resumes are simpler.

1. Objectives are out; summaries are in

Replace "Seeking a challenging position..." with two lines about what you do and the job you want.

2. Contact details are shorter

Use your name, city and state, one phone number, and a professional email address. You don't need your full street address, a fax number, or "References available upon request".

3. Keep the format simple

Many employers run resumes through applicant tracking software. One column, standard headings (Summary, Experience, Education, Skills), and no tables, text boxes or graphics. Send a PDF or Word file, as the posting asks.

4. Write results, not duties

"Duties included..." is outdated. Start each bullet with an action and, where you can, a result: "Trained 6 new cashiers" or "Kept the stockroom organized for a 3-person team."

5. Show current skills

List today's tools you actually use, even everyday ones: email, smartphone apps, Excel or Google Sheets, video calls. Drop tools that are long gone.

6. You'll often apply online

Many applications ask you to upload the resume and then retype it into a form. Keep a plain-text copy handy to paste from. We include one with every order if you ask.

Fictional sample

Fictional example: "Barbara Lowe" isn't a real person. Every name, employer, number and date below is made up to illustrate the advice. It isn't a customer's resume.

Barbara is a made-up 61-year-old who worked 22 years at one credit union and is now job hunting.
