Cover letters for experienced workers
A good cover letter today is short, about 200 to 300 words, and written for one specific job. It shouldn't retell your whole career.
1. Three short paragraphs
One: the job you're applying for and why it interests you. Two: one or two specific examples that match what they need. Three: a simple, polite close.
2. Use their posting
Pick the two most important requirements and answer them directly with real examples.
3. One strong example beats a list
"At Hilltop Hardware I rebuilt the ordering process and cut out-of-stocks by about a third" is more memorable than ten adjectives.
4. Skip the dated phrases
"To whom it may concern", "Enclosed please find", and "I have over 30 years of experience" in the first line can all go. Use a name if you can find one, or "Dear Hiring Manager".
5. Address a change or gap only briefly
If you're changing fields or returning after time away, one positive sentence is enough.
Fictional sample
Fictional example: "Frank Moreno" isn't a real person. Every name, employer, number and date below is made up to illustrate the advice. It isn't a customer's resume.
Frank is a made-up former print shop owner applying for a production coordinator job.
Dear Hiring Manager,
I'm applying for the Production Coordinator role at Lakeside Packaging (fictional). After 18 years running a commercial print shop, I'm looking to bring my scheduling and quality-control experience to a larger operation.
Your posting asks for someone who can keep multiple jobs on schedule. At my shop I scheduled 30 to 40 jobs a week across three presses, and I set up a proof-check step that nearly eliminated reprints.
I'd welcome the chance to talk. Thank you for your time.
Frank Moreno

An honest note: we use AI to help
We use AI writing tools to help draft and format your resume. A real person reads, checks and edits every page before it reaches you.
- We never make anything up: no invented jobs, dates, degrees, licenses or skills. If something is unclear, we ask you.
- We take out your phone number, email and street address before using any AI tool and put them back at the end.
- You can ask us to delete your information at any time. See our privacy note.
What we won't do
- We will never ask for passwords, PINs, bank or card numbers, or your Social Security number. Please don't send them. Anyone who asks you for these is not us.
- We don't log into job websites or accounts for you.
- We don't give legal, medical, or financial advice, and we don't make those decisions for you.
- We can't promise you'll get a job or an interview. Nobody honestly can.
