How to write your Google Business Profile description

Your business description is one of the first things people read when they find you on Google. It's short, free to edit, and worth getting right.

1. Know the limit and the rules

The description field allows up to 750 characters. Google's guidelines say it should be about your business and must not include links or focus on promotions, prices or sales. See Google's guidelines for representing your business.

2. Put the important part first

Only the first part may show before "More". Lead with what you do and where: "Family-owned auto repair shop in East Lansing, fixing domestic and import cars since 1998."

3. Say who you serve and what you're known for

Your main services, the kind of customers you help, and what makes you different, such as same-day service, a specialty, bilingual staff, or decades in the neighborhood. Keep it factual.

4. Write it like you'd say it

Plain words, no ALL CAPS, no emoji strings, and no keyword stuffing. Customers read it, not just Google.

5. Keep it true

Don't claim awards, years in business, licenses or "#1" status you can't back up. Misleading content breaks Google's rules and customers' trust.

6. Fill in the rest of the profile too

Hours, services, photos, and categories matter as much as the description. The description is just the part that's hardest to write.

Fictional example

Fictional example: "Eastside Shoe Repair" is made up. Every name, business, number and date below is invented to illustrate the advice. It isn't from a real customer.

Eastside Shoe Repair is a made-up business. Here's a fictional description written to Google's guidelines.

Business description (about 520 characters):

Eastside Shoe Repair is a family-run cobbler shop on Grand Avenue, fixing shoes, boots, handbags and leather goods for over 25 years. We replace heels and soles, stretch and resize, repair zippers, and restore worn leather, often while you wait. We also repair work boots for local trades. Our owner, Tony, learned the craft from his father and still does every repair by hand. Drop in during business hours. No appointment needed.
