Resume without a degree

Plenty of good jobs don't require a degree, and some employers and state governments have dropped degree requirements for many roles. Your resume should put what you can do in front.

1. Don't leave Education blank, but don't lead with it

Put Education near the bottom. A high school diploma or GED, trade school, some college, or an unfinished program can all be listed honestly: "Coursework toward A.A.S. in Business, Ivy Tech, 2015–2016".

2. Lead with skills and certifications

A skills section near the top, plus any certificates or licenses (forklift, CDL, CNA, Microsoft Office Specialist, food safety, Google Career Certificates), shows readiness right away.

3. Show results in every job

Results are what replace the degree. "Trained 8 new hires", "Handled the store's weekly ordering" or "Promoted to shift lead within a year" all show you can handle more.

4. Include training you did on the job

Company training programs, safety courses, and vendor certifications count. List them with the year.

5. Read the requirements carefully

Some postings say "degree or equivalent experience". If yours qualifies, make the equivalent experience obvious in your summary, such as "8 years of bookkeeping experience".

6. Never imply a degree you don't have

Background checks verify degrees, so an implied degree can cost you the job later. "Some college" is honest and perfectly acceptable.
