Google profile description: plumber or HVAC contractor

When a pipe bursts or the heat goes out, people pick quickly. Your description should tell them, in seconds, what you fix, where you go, and whether you can come soon.

1. Lead with the trades and the area

"Licensed plumbing and heating contractor serving Lancaster County" is a strong opening. Name your main towns if you're a service-area business.

2. Mention licensing and insurance factually

"Licensed and insured" is a meaningful line for home services, but only if both are true and current. You don't need license numbers in the description.

3. Describe emergency service honestly

If you answer calls around the clock, say so. If it's "same-day when available" or "after-hours for existing customers", say exactly that. Overpromising leads to bad reviews.

4. List the jobs people search for

Water heaters, drain cleaning, leak repair, sump pumps, furnace and boiler repair, heat pumps, A/C tune-ups, ductless systems. Keep the full list for the services section.

5. Leave out prices and offers

"Free estimates" and seasonal discounts are promotions. Put them in posts, not the description.

Fictional before and after

Fictional before and after. Everything below is made up: every name, business, number and date is invented to illustrate the advice. It isn't from a real customer.

Keystone Plumbing & Heating is a made-up business. Here's a fictional profile description, rewritten to Google's guidelines.

Before (100 characters):

Keystone Plumbing & Heating - $49 service call special! 24/7! Best plumber in PA! Click our website!

After (573 of 750 characters; no links, prices or promotions):

Keystone Plumbing & Heating is a licensed and insured plumbing and HVAC contractor serving Lancaster, Lititz, Ephrata and nearby towns. We repair and replace water heaters, clear drains, fix leaks and install sump pumps, and we service furnaces, boilers, heat pumps and central air for homes and small businesses. Our technicians arrive in marked vans, wear shoe covers, and explain your options before starting any work. We answer calls seven days a week and offer same-day service whenever our schedule allows. Owner Dave Martin has worked in the trade for over 20 years.

What changed: removed the price, the "best in PA" claim and the link. "24/7" became an honest description of real availability.
